he National League for Democracy, founded in 1988 is the party of Aung San Suu Kyi, the well know freedom fighter who has lived under house arrest between 1996 and 2010, after which Myanmar slowly opened up towards democracy. Aung San Suu Kyi became state counselor, after the NLD won the elections in 2015 and got a majority in parliament. She was not allowed to be president, because of her British husband and children.
The National League for Democracy already won a general election in 1990, which (history repeats itself) was just as in February 1 2021 declared invalid by the military regime.
Between 1990 & 2021 the NLD was allowed and forbidden on and of by the military to be active.
Until the military regime took over parliament on the first of February 2021, the National League for Democracy was the ruling party and they won the 2020 election. On the first of February 2021, the new parliament with a majority for the NLD was supposed to be sworn in.
NUG : National Unity Government
Currently the NLD is part of the national unity government (NUG) which is the alternative government in exile.
The NUG started a peoples army called PDF - People Defense Force. However during their ruling time in parliament the relation of the NLD with ethnic minorities was fragile. Therefor the cooperation with EAO's Ethnic Armed Organization is not very smooth, there is a common enemy but trust is very thin.
It seems very difficult for a People Defense Force to defeat the Myanmar Army which is described in this article
Its a remarkable shift for the NLD as they were known for their non violence protest for which Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel price for peace.
On 21 May 2021 the SAC (State Administration Council) dissolved the party.
